When we stumbled upon Dorito’s social media profile, we immediately fell in love with his striking orange fur, captivating facial expressions, and mesmerizing green eye. Intrigued by his story, we contacted his owner Michelle to uncover more about this charming one-eyed feline. Michelle kindly obliged and regaled us with Dorito’s tale, including the unfortunate injury he sustained to his eye prior to being rescued, and how he eventually found his forever home with her in October 2017.
To our surprise, we also discovered that Dorito wasn’t the only one-eyed cat in Michelle’s household, and that he refused to let his disability limit his zest for life! We were captivated by the unique name that Michelle had given him and the adorable way he spends his days in his new home in Halifax, Canada. Overall, it was both entertaining and heartwarming to hear about Dorito’s journey, and we hope you’ll feel the same way!
The photo on Instagram from @king.dorito_ shows a cat named Dorito who was found as a stray on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada. He had been there for a few months before his injury was noticed, but the owners assumed he was born with it and didn’t worry about it. However, with winter approaching, they didn’t want him to be outside in the cold, so they planned to surrender him to the SPCA. Unfortunately, the SPCA was already overwhelmed with animals during kitten season.
After finding out that most rescue organizations were already at their maximum capacity, a friend asked me if I could help with Dorito’s condition. I took him in and brought him straight to the vet not knowing that he was feral. I only realized it when I saw him in a plastic container with holes. Despite his condition, my heart melted when I finally saw him and immediately felt fond of him.
To my surprise, he was very friendly and sweet. He loved being petted, and he was fond of people. It might sound cliché, but I fell in love with him at first sight. Unfortunately, after his check-up, we found out that he had an ear infection and ulcer on his cornea, which left his eye untreated for too long resulting in its removal.
Instagram user @king.dorito_ shared a photo of their one-eyed cat and when asked by MAF why they decided to adopt him, they replied saying that they have a soft spot for special animals and already have a three-legged cat named Ziggy and another one-eyed cat named Herbie, so they knew he would fit right in.
The decision to keep Dorito was an easy one because he has the most delightful personality. He’s also incredibly sweet, and people often express their regret about not finding him first. Regarding the corneal ulcer that caused him to lose his eye, could you share some details with us?
Rewritten:
Dorito’s Instagram account, @king.dorito_, features a photo of him with a visible eye injury. However, the cause of his corneal ulcer remains unknown. The vet who examined him stated that the injury had been present for a year or more. Despite this setback, Dorito has become quite popular on social media. By the way, can you share with us how Dorito got his unique name?
A cute little kitty named Dorito got his name in an unexpected way. His owner was snacking on some Doritos with a friend when the idea struck. The name was just perfect for him!
Moving on, people tend to have misconceptions about cats who look different, especially those with one eye. But these cats are just as loving and playful as any other cat. It’s important not to judge them based on their appearance.
M:
There is a common misconception about one-eyed and other different-looking cats that they are broken or disabled in some way. However, this is far from the truth. Dorito, my one-eyed cat, for example, has no limitations and is an excellent hunter. He catches black flies around the house and June bugs in his catio with impeccable skills. Unfortunately, I often hear people making comments like “poor baby,” “how sad,” or “I can’t even look at him; it makes me want to cry,” which I dislike. I wish more people knew that cats like Dorito have unique qualities and abilities that make them wonderful companions. In fact, having one eye has never slowed him down. Additionally, I haven’t faced any challenges due to Dorito’s condition, except that his brother Herbie seems to have lost some depth perception.

@king.dorito_ on Instagram shared a message about one-eyed cats. They are not much different from other cats, except for their appearance. Despite having only one eye, they can easily adapt and have the same amount of love to offer, if not more. As for Dorito’s favorite activities, he loves playing in tunnels, chasing laser cat toys, bird watching in his catio, and of course, eating.
To his owner, Dorito means everything. They share an unbreakable bond, and he always stays by their side, sleeps with them, and wakes them up every morning. Though it may seem crazy, Dorito seems genuinely appreciative of being rescued and being a part of their lives.
