Rosie couldn’t help but fall in love with a long-haired blind cat from Wilmington, North Carolina after spotting an Instagram post about her. The fluffy feline’s sweet face captured her heart right away.
The photo posted on Instagram by @matt_thesupercat shows how Rosie has adopted a blind tabby and white cat named Matt in November 2018. Rosie believed that she could provide the special care that Matt needs to thrive, so when she saw another cat that needs a new home, she thought it would be a great fit for her and that she could offer her a wonderful new home.
In December of last year, Rosie got in touch with the owner of a cute cat named Matt the Supercat on Instagram. As it turns out, the owner had adopted him from a local shelter a year prior. Unfortunately, due to some personal reasons, she could no longer take care of the poor blind feline. It was also revealed that Matt’s first home was with an elderly woman who passed away in her home. By the time rescuers found him, his eye infection was so advanced that they had to remove both eyes.
After undergoing surgery and adapting to being a blind cat, she was up for adoption again a year later. Thankfully, the owner of the five-year-old feline agreed to let Rosie adopt her. The sweet cat was found making biscuits on the couch when Rosie picked her up from the apartment. After a quiet ride home, she settled into her new forever home.
The tiny cat who was visually impaired had a two-hour journey in the car and finally reached Rosie’s place located in Raleigh, North Carolina. After arriving, she received a new name, signifying a new beginning. Rosie gave her the name ‘Ellie’, as it was a shortened version of Elektra, a character from Daredevil. She decided to keep with the theme while naming Ellie as Matt, the original cat’s name, also came from Daredevil’s character, Matt Murdock.
Rosie attempted to facilitate Ellie and Matt’s gradual adaptation to each other by keeping them apart, but her efforts were largely unsuccessful. According to Rosie, Matt dislikes closed doors and prefers to have unrestricted access throughout the house. Consequently, he frequently attempted to enter the room where Ellie was located.
According to Rosie, it was a bit of a struggle at first for Ellie to adjust to her new surroundings. Matt also had to learn to share his territory with a new cat. However, things improved with time. Rosie recalls that eventually, the two cats became accustomed to each other. Ellie also grew more comfortable with Rosie, enjoying belly rubs and even sitting on her lap.
Over a year has passed, and Ellie has developed close bonds with both her mom and Matt. Rosie used to closely monitor their interactions because Matt would sometimes hit his smaller sister, but now Ellie can often be seen snuggling with her adopted brother. According to Rosie, when Ellie isn’t cuddling with them, she enjoys lounging in her cat bed to soak up the sun, running in circles, playing with noisy toys, sitting in the toy basket, and grooming her fluffy fur.
Although blind, the cat took a bit of time to learn how to move around her home. Rosie recalls how the cat would occasionally let out a tiny and adorable meow when she found herself stuck on high surfaces and couldn’t get down without help. This is why people often ask Rosie how her visually-impaired cats manage to navigate their environment.
Rosie is aware that Ellie only required some patience and time to develop a cognitive layout of their residence by employing her other senses. Rosie states that a person who was observing a video of their blind cats roaming around their apartment without any prior knowledge about their blindness would never suspect it. The cats are familiar with the location of everything in the house and enjoy running around and playing, just like any other cat.
Rosie has noticed that many people mistakenly believe blind cats are less active or happy compared to cats who can see. However, her experience with Ellie and Matt proves otherwise. Despite their lack of sight, these cats have developed heightened senses of smell and hearing to navigate their surroundings. Rosie wants to emphasize that blind cats are just as unique and lovable as any other cat, with distinct personalities that bring happiness to their owners.
Although it may take some extra patience in the beginning, Rosie thinks that taking in a blind cat is worth the effort. She says, “I really enjoy having blind cats and I’m thrilled that two of them have found their way to me!”
According to Rosie, Ellie, a lovely blind cat, has already lived with at least two other families before settling in with her and Matt. However, Rosie is positive that Ellie will never have to leave her care because the feline is simply adoring. Since Ellie rarely meows and loves to snuggle with her mother all day long, Rosie often compares her to a stuffed toy that has come to life.
Rosie describes the feline as an easy-going and affectionate creature, probably one of the most charming cats she has ever encountered. She adds that the cat’s sweetness and loving nature bring immense happiness to her life. Even during the toughest days, the cat manages to put a smile on Rosie’s face.
