The days spent in a shelter are sometimes overlooked in favor of a puppy’s long and painful days. These essential responsibilities pale in comparison to love and concern. Not to mention the terrible future that awaits them if they are not adopted.
This occurs far too frequently in operations with a high death toll. So, what happens when an unwanted shelter dog discovers its life is about to be turned upside down after being adopted by a family?
Much has been said about the effects of adoption, but experiencing them firsthand transcends words. This is the case with Benny, a beautiful and calm dog adopted from the high-kill Carson Animal Care Center in Gardena, California. Benny was essentially on death row before he was adopted. So, what was his response?
Initially, Benny appeared to be bursting with excitement. He attempts to maintain composure as he looks around and sits as still as possible as he waits to see if this is his family. However, it is clear that he is terrified on the inside. “Am I theirs? Am I theirs? Is this it?” I believe the conversation will proceed as follows.
He is working extremely hard to maintain composure. I was nearly moved to tears by his enthusiasm. Then, the red leash of happily ever after is presented, and Benny explodes with happiness upon meeting his new family! As his new family leads him to their car, an instant bond is formed.
