Mandy and Jack had always had a happy, childless life, which was exactly what they wanted out of life. Jack’s lifetime buddies formed a close-knit circle with whom they frequently spent their days participating in various group activities and trips. But Mandy saw something was amiss: Jack was keeping her out of these get-togethers more and more. What caused this abrupt shift in behavior? Continue reading to learn the fundamental causes.
Jack and I had created the kind of life that many would be jealous of for over ten years: a perfect balance of affection, common goals, and never-ending adventures.
However, some months ago, something changed.
In the past, Jack and I were always together at social functions, whether they were work-related or just get-togethers planned by his friends. He had known these pals long before our paths ever crossed, back when they were playing football in high school.
But lately, Jack had started coming up with all kinds of excuses to keep me home while he went out to these social events.
He would say, “It’s just a boys’ night, Mandy,” as he was getting ready to go. “You don’t think you’d really enjoy hanging out with the guys all night?”
His statements appeared to have some validity. After all, I don’t really like cigars, and a night out with the boys usually featured beer, chicken wings, and card games.
So, I thought Jack was real at first. Furthermore, it made sense that the spouses of the majority of his acquaintances would have been too busy with their kids to attend these events.
But when I ran into Kevin’s wife Marcia, who happens to be one of Jack’s oldest pals, in the grocery store, everything changed.
She gave me a backward embrace and cried, “Mandy!” “Dear, how are you doing?”
“I’m fine,” I answered, grinning at her twin kids who were with her. “It’s been a long since we last spoke,”
It had, in fact, been. “Well, Jack mentioned that you were trying for a baby and dealing with hormone treatments,” Marcia said, her countenance clouding somewhat. I had no idea that you were doing IVF! I would have thrown my support behind you sooner if I had known.
I was taken aback. Why would Jack make up a tale like that?
“And how are the hormone injections working for you?” Marcia asked, a worried expression on her face.
“It’s been an adjustment,” I pretended while hiding my bewilderment.
Then, she said, “I hope to see you at the next dinner!” “I’ve truly missed our understated criticism of the other women’s wardrobe selections.”
Dinner next? I couldn’t figure it out. What more had escaped my notice?
Marcia giggled, “You wouldn’t believe some of the outfits at the last poker night.” “I guess I forgot to call you about it, but I meant to.”
Her remarks alluded to Jack’s potential deceitful motivations, whatever they may be.
“Is everything going well with the IVF?” While gathering some bananas, she inquired.
“Yes,” I answered, still astonished. “Simply going one step at a time.”
I didn’t really understand IVF, and I didn’t know why Jack was lying.
Was this his coded way of saying that he was starting to crave kids? It didn’t seem plausible. How else could he have told his pals that we were trying to become pregnant?
I whispered to myself, “He just doesn’t want you there,” and made my way to the register.
We had a sorrowful and perplexing trip home. I couldn’t figure it out.
Back at my house, I wondered why Jack would want me to stay away from these events.
Was there another individual present? No, that sounded like too much risk. There would inevitably be a mistake.
I made the decision to look into it more.
I saw that couples were invited to an upcoming dinner when I logged onto our shared calendar. It seems that Jack had been erasing comparable occurrences from his own history.
I quickly deleted the entry and RSVP’d for the two of us.
I gave Jack a “date night” surprise the evening of the meal.
“Dinner fancy?” he asked, glancing at my attire.
Indeed! I answered, keeping our location a mystery, “Let’s make it special.”
The mood was tight when we arrived, with our friends welcoming us in a tense silence.
Not only was there discomfort involved, but Jack’s ex-girlfriend Sasha, who is now married to one of his closest pals, was there, which shocked me.
The meal was awkward, with tense conversations and strange looks from Sasha, particularly in Jack’s direction.
Sasha frequently steered the conversation toward Jack when she talked.
Why had Jack kept Sasha’s membership in the gang a secret? Was there more to their past, or was he just shielding me?
The possibility of a confrontation weighed heavily on the car trip home.
“Mandy, since Sasha and Mark recently got married, she’s now a part of the group,” Jack nervously said.
“Why did you keep it from me?” I insisted.
Jack clarified that because of our historical animosities, Sasha had recommended it may be best for us to attend different events.
As I questioned his choice to have Sasha set the parameters of my engagement, he became more silent.
He expressed regret and denied having a romantic relationship with Sasha.
When I got home, I confronted Jack about the IVF lie as he was making tea.
He said that he had made it up when he was talking to his pals about me.
Even though his narrative was ridiculous, it made us talk more about our future parenting strategies and confirmed that, should we ever decide to have children, we would probably adopt.
As I lay in bed, I considered Jack’s justifications for shielding me from Sasha’s petty antics and considered how we would engage with the group going forward.
Jack committed to openness going ahead.
He laughed, “Marcia will probably update you anyway.”
I was still uneasy, though, about the IVF hoax and how to deal with it going ahead.
In my position, how would you have responded?
