I have a Christmas tale that is more bizarre than fiction. What started out as a joke evolved into a Christmas meal that none of us will soon forget.
I visited the shopping recently to choose a frock for the Christmas party I was throwing. Claire, a young woman, was employed in the sales division. To put it simply, she has a special way of bringing joy to the holidays.
She made the decision to criticize my wardrobe selections, and she began making fun of me when I tried on one of her advised dresses. She said, “Maybe a diet will help you, or it’ll blow up on you on Christmas. You definitely need a bigger size.”
While some were surprised, others chuckled. Nice, huh? Having neither the energy nor the time to engage with this snarky kid, I ignored her and left the store.
I tried to phone my spouse when I came home, but he wasn’t accessible. I couldn’t stop crying as I told my son everything while he was there. I stopped him before he could approach the saleswoman since he was so angry. Right now, at least, I didn’t want to take things too far.
When Christmas Eve finally arrived, I looked forward to seeing my son and his girlfriend. The entire family was present, and it was the first time we had met her. It was a unique day that exceeded my expectations in terms of memorability. My son’s girlfriend turned out to be Claire, the same person who made fun of me at the store, when the pair showed up.
This is the fascinating part. Claire’s expression changed to crimson as soon as she recognized me. She wanted to get out of the unpleasant situation because she felt embarrassed. She said she wasn’t feeling well and recommended going.
Initially, I wanted to throw her out. However, I made the decision to give her one more go. Perhaps she was having personal issues that day. I convinced her to remain because I’m such a kind hostess. “Oh, Claire, it’s so great to finally meet you!” I mustered a grin. Please enter! We will attend to your needs.
There was a palpable tension in the air while we ate supper. Claire avoided making eye contact with me, attempting to appear calm. She had no idea what was about to happen. We laughed and spoke about everything over our wonderful supper.
Our relatives told us about their experiences in the previous year. With one exception, everyone was at ease. Several times, Claire’s crude and cheap jokes made my mother-in-law feel uneasy. I witnessed my son reaching out to stop her. But that was it for me.
Then the time arrived that we had all been anticipating. I made the decision to share a small surprise of my own right in the middle of the Christmas feast. “You know, I wouldn’t ruin our Christmas, but there is someone here who shouldn’t be,” I shared with the entire family, echoing Claire’s remarks from the store. It was almost like hearing a pin drop.
My kid in particular had a look of amazement that looked like it was straight out of a movie. Claire, who was always the first to make fun of others, found herself in the news for the wrong reasons.
God bless my son, he was having trouble believing what he was hearing. He took command of the situation without thinking twice. He gave Claire a disbelieving and disappointed look, and that was the end of their romance.
There was a sense of poetic justice in the air as Claire packed everything and went. Now, the lady who made fun of someone’s appearance was having to live with the repercussions of her own remarks.
My kid came up to me later that night when we were clearing away the remains of what had been meant to be a happy Christmas supper. He expressed gratitude to me for being truthful and revealing Claire’s true self. He came to the realization that he deserved a caring and respectful partner.
Justice never takes a vacation. Even when it comes with an unexpected side of drama, there are moments when the truth is the finest present you can get. To a Christmas that I will always remember!
