Herman pushes his stepson through emotional hardship in order to hide his adultery. The boy’s mother, his scorned wife, takes meticulous revenge after learning the truth.
Billie Holiday’s velvety tones filled the space, her voice engulfing the two entwined on the white couch. In the dimly lit living room, thirty-something Herman and his secret sweetheart, Jezebel, stole minutes.
“It feels so wrong right now!” Jezebel muttered. What happens if your spouse returns earlier?
It’s been more than a year since my wife came home early! We’ve got the entire morning,” Herman promised.
“Everything that morning!” Jezebel said it again. “Okay, Mr. Loverman, let’s not squander it. Give me a sincere kiss.
Herman answered, chuckling, “That’s just the beginning; wait and see.”
Before a squeak from the door awakened them, they were buried in each other. Herman’s wife was expected to be gone for hours, so panic set in.
“Who might that be?” Jezebel mumbled something.
Frantically, Herman exclaimed, “It can’t be my wife.” “She informed me that she had late work. Get this quickly.
With a thump, the front door shut, leaving Herman to bear the repercussions.
A youthful voice shattered the quiet. “Herman? Are you present? Jake, Herman’s stepson, entered with his rucksack slung over his shoulders.
“Jake, why are you home?” Exasperated, Herman enquired.
Jake said, “They sent us home early because they had a scare.” “They believed that there was a gun at the school.” “Who is this lady, Herman?” As he asked, Jake glanced at Jezebel.
Herman shrugged off Jezebel’s existence. “Jake, you’re having delusions.”
But Jake said, “I see a lady right there.”
Herman made up a story about how shocked Jake was by what had happened at school.
“Close your eyes and give me ten counts.” The ghost cannot see you if you are invisible to it. And see, if you do that, it will disappear.
Jezebel crept into the bedroom as Jake did his math. The woman was gone when he opened his eyes.
“Did I cause her to vanish?” Jake cried out.
The ghost was vanquished by you. Herman commended the brave youngster that he was.
Herman gave Jake unrestricted screen time after he convinced him to keep the incident a secret.
Jake departed, and Jezebel came back, criticizing Herman’s behavior. What did it consist of? You told your son a lie?
“Stepson,” Herman filled in. “What were your expectations? Tell the truth to him about us. Whatever it takes, I’ll do to keep us together.
Jezebel let out a sigh. “Okay, no problem,” she said.
That was quite close, Herman said. “Let’s carry on at another time!”
She gave him a final kiss and said, “Yeah.” “I’ll see you later, Mr. Loverman,” she enticingly said.
Grace, Herman’s wife, arrived home at nightfall. As they sat down to dinner, tension lingered. Jake used the opportunity to narrate his peculiar day.
“Mum, we left school early today because they thought someone had a gun inside the building,” he said in his opening statement.
“What the heck happened?” Grace gulped.
It proved to be an unfounded alarm. I presume it everything went well, Jake? Herman said something in response.
“I’m fine,” said Jake. “However, I saw a ghost when I got home.”
“A spirit?” Concerned, Grace enquired.
Shrouded in anxiety, Herman stepped in and said, “It’s just his imagination.” “Secondhand trauma from the school incident.”
Grace ignored Herman and concentrated on Jake. “How did the ghost appear?”
Jake said, “She was a lady with big, frizzy hair.”
“Her?” Grace looked at Herman and repeated.
Herman gave a tense laugh. “He’s only stunned. He instructed Jake to “go watch some cartoons.”
Herman leaned in to attempt to appease Grace after Jake departed. There was still tension.
Grace remarked, “I’ll give the school a call to schedule a psychological consultation.” “You may take him since you’re not working.”
Herman was on the verge of shouting, “I’m looking for work!”
“I am aware. But perhaps spend more time helping Jake and less time at Moe’s Diner, Grace firmly urged.
Herman promised to assist with her son but didn’t say anything.
Grace made the decision to talk to Jake after supper. “Hey sweetie, maybe talking to the counselor will help you understand what’s going on.”
Jake smiled sweetly, “Okay, Mom,” and bid Herman and Grace good night.
Knowing that his covert relationship with Jezebel was unraveling, Herman felt a deep sense of sorrow. Though he had intended to handle it better, it was becoming more and more challenging.
Grace and Herman were sitting in the living room when their eyes met. It is great if we see the doctor with him. My boy’s welfare is important.
Herman said it wasn’t essential, but Grace’s tenacity prevailed in their subsequent argument. “I’ll schedule Jake a visit with the psychologist! And I’m going with him directly!”
Jake’s nervousness was obvious in Dr. Warren’s brightly colored office. His little fists gripped the chair tightly.
Dr. Warren gave him a warm greeting. “Jake, let’s talk about what happened.”
Recalling the terrifying occurrence and Herman’s ghost trick, Jake hesitated. “Herman told me that if I closed my eyes, the ghost would go away.”
Dr Warren looked across at Grace. Which trick had Herman taught him? What ghost?
Grace gave an explanation of Herman’s existence in their life as her second husband. Jake then remarked, “Herman said the ghost can’t see me when I close my eyes, so it goes away.”
Dr. Warren addressed Jake tenderly. Closing your eyes won’t make threats disappear. It’s critical to speak with a trustworthy person.
Jake nodded and said he was afraid the ghost would split up his family. “I noticed a woman. I fear that she will force Herman to part from Mom.
Dr. Warren gave Grace a glance. “I suggest holding frequent sessions to assist Jake in comprehending his emotions. He turned to face the youngster and said, “Jake, could you just wait outside for a minute? Mom will be joining you shortly. I must set up your next meeting with her.
With a nod, Jake departed the room.
Because of his father’s infidelity, I divorced him. Grace revealed to Dr. Warren that he had an affair.
The physician gave a nod. He clarified, “What’s going on with Jake is a textbook example of Kleinian Projective Identification.”
Is this situation serious? How are we going to respond? Concerned, Grace enquired.
“You’re not worried,” Dr. Warren comforted her. “A idea from Melanie Klein’s work in child psychology is called projected identification. It involves a young child projecting their emotions onto an object or person, which causes other people to feel the same way and results in actions similar to Jake’s. We can deal with this.
“My only concern is for Jake’s well-being,” said Grace’s concern. “We will go above and beyond to help him if you believe you can.”
Dr. Warren said, “I’d like to work with Jake on a regular basis.” He could require medicine and counseling. I’m here to help the two of you.
Over dinner, Grace gave Herman an update on the diagnosis. “What was the doctor’s diagnosis?” Herman enquired.
Grace retorted, “Something about projecting fears onto the external world.”
Is this a serious problem? Herman asked.
Yes, in Dr. Warren’s opinion. Grace said, “Jake might need medication.”
Herman dipped his head to concentrate on his food. “Is there a problem?” inquired Grace.
Herman was unconvincing when he answered, “Uh, no, no, nothing wrong.” “Just pondering.”
“Tomorrow, I’m going to take the afternoon off to have lunch with Jake. We could persuade him to open up if we spend time together.
“All right,” Uneasy, Herman consented.
Grace and Jake talked about their dinner selections at Moe’s Diner. Jake closed his eyes abruptly and mentioned the ghost in their living room.
“The specter? Are you certain, my love? With anxiety, Grace enquired.
Jake gestured to Jezebel, the blonde waitress. Grace came up to ask her whether there had been any strange activity at the diner. Jezebel, though, dismissed any tales of ghosts.
Grace persisted, doubtful, “It’s just that kids sense things sometimes, you know? weird feelings or experiences. It would certainly assist my kid and me to know there is nothing out of the ordinary.
Jezebel played down Grace’s worries, saying Jake had a big imagination. Thanking her, Grace went back to the table.
But there was something strange about Jezebel. Grace felt the truth was not far away.
Grace said nothing when Jezebel brought the meal. Jake closed his eyes, then counted one more.
Grace reassured Jake, “It’s okay now, she’s gone.” Opening his eyes, Jake went back to his ice cream.
Grace thought of something. Jake: Shall we give Herman a ring and extend an invitation to lunch?
Reluctantly, Jake nodded.
Grace grinned. However, my phone is dead. I’ll ask the server if I may utilize hers.
“My phone’s out of battery,” Grace stated as she walked up to Jezebel. Could I borrow yours to give my workplace a short call?”
With hesitation, Jezebel gave her phone to the man. “Okay, go ahead,” she said.
When Grace called Herman, she was astounded to find “Loverman” displayed as Jezebel’s caller ID. Startled, she abruptly hung up and went back to the table. Now the truth was evident.
She gave Jake a little grin and urged him to eat his food.
Grace made Jake a playdate and went back home. She sat down on the sofa and dialed Dr. Warren.
It’s Grace. I need your assistance and backing.
As Grace narrated the incidents, she disclosed her intention to take Herman’s possessions. Dr. Warren supported her choice.
Arriving shortly, movers packed Herman’s belongings.
Herman was perplexed when he came. “Grace, what’s going on?” Perplexed, he inquired, “Why are these men taking our things?”
With a scornful look on her lips, Grace imitated the ruse Herman had pulled on their kid.
Oh, what guys, Herman? No guys that I can see. Ghosts must be appearing to you. Furthermore, those belong to you; they are not ours.
Herman’s expression became white. It was now the other way around.
“Grace, you must believe me,” he said in a shaking voice. All of this was not what I wanted to happen. I—
Grace cut him off with a firm, uncompromising voice. “Herman, you can’t make any justifications. Lies and treachery have had their day. You are nothing more than a ghost to me!
Herman’s remorse flooded Herman’s eyes, but Grace didn’t waver. She told him it was the last day of their shared existence, as his things were being put into storage.
“Dr. Warren and I have also discussed filing criminal charges for emotional abuse. The cops will arrive soon.
Two cops showed up shortly after, their badges shining. Justice was done when they read Herman his rights and placed him under arrest.
Satisfied, Grace took a position near the entrance. Her method of causing Herman’s spirit to vanish was to close her eyes and count to 10.
She opened her eyes to see Jake go to her and give her a strong embrace.
Grace hugged him tightly. Although they didn’t know what was ahead, they were prepared to confront it head-on with courage and love because they were together.
