Not everyone can afford the luxury of vacations. Making the most of your vacations is always the goal, regardless of how often you take them.
When OP organized a couples’ getaway for herself and her spouse, she intended to accomplish just that. On this trip, her husband and sister-in-law (SIL) were also accompanying her.
The problem was the Airbnb that OP booked was not dog friendly. Her sister-in-law has a dog who she believes should be allowed everywhere.
OP made sure her SIL understood this stipulation. She said she understood and it won’t be a problem because she will find a dogsitter to take care of Brute while they were in Florida.
The Airbnb was in a really nice beachfront area in Tampa but was 15 hours from where they live. OP and her husband chose to fly there but her SIL insisted on driving because it was cheaper.
When they arrived at the house, SIL and her husband were already on the driveway. SIL asked OP if she had to keys to the property.
OP said that she did because they met up with the property owner ahead of time. SIL was relieved and said, “Oh good, give them to me quick so I can get Brute inside without being seen.”
OP’s only reaction was to say, “Are you f*cking kidding me right now?”
Her SIL violated the only restriction and said she couldn’t find a sitter. She also noted that Brute was old and house-trained, so she didn’t see the point of the ignorant no pets rule.
OP’s husband was gobsmacked by his sister’s actions and sat there shaking his head. OP’s vacation was not off to a good start.
OP went back inside their rental car and left instead of dealing with her SIL’s lack of consideration. OP got a full refund from Airbnb, met up with the property owner, and told her what happened.
The owner said OP and her husband could still stay at the house because they were forthcoming with what happened but OP declined the offer. They booked a hotel for the week to enjoy the rest of their time.
Her SIL didn’t let them have a moment of peace and began calling them. She said she couldn’t afford to stay in the area and they didn’t pack snacks to tide them over.
OP ignored all of her protests because her SIL basically ruined the vacation OP planned and paid for herself. OP spent $4,000 on the Airbnb alone.
OP’s mother-in-law said they shouldn’t have abandoned SIL and her husband. She said OP could have given them money for food instead of leaving them stranded.
OP said: “Nope, they can just drive back home and get food there.” OP’s original post can be read below:

Who goes on vacation with no money, not even snack-money, on them?
They know OP had money and tried to get sympathy points

SIL lied about bringing her dog, it’s not that far out that she also lied about having no money
SIL displayed an insane amount of entitlement even for this sub’s standards
If OP’s mother-in-law is so concerned about her daughter, she should Venmo them some money instead of guilting OP
There are places where pets shouldn’t be allowed to go to and it’s inconsiderate to bring them just to prove a point
She was really counting on OP to go along with her shenanigans
That’s the real reason why she didn’t fly to Tampa
Rules are in place for a reason. The Airbnb owner could have allergies and even if they didn’t, it’s their property to do so as they wished.

If she really wanted to bring the dog with her, she should have booked a separate place that would allow him
SIL probably didn’t even consider this
The Airbnb host lost a lot of income because of this incident
OP explained how the refund process took place
While OP was not an a**hole for leaving her entitled SIL behind but abruptly cancelling a reservation cost the host a lot of money
The only thing OP’s SIL had to do on this vacation was not bring her dog. She didn’t have to shell out any money, deal with accommodations, or plan activities.
OP handled all of that and paid for everything but she was still accused of being an a**hole. No good deed indeed.
