A young woman’s heart aches with every visit home, where memories and cherished belongings lie in ruins. Despite leaving for college years ago, her connection to the past is shattered piece by piece by the sister she once adored, whose actions leave a trail of destruction in what should be a sanctuary of love and trust.

What began as small acts of mischief has grown into a painful pattern of disregard and damage. The woman’s frustration and sorrow are tangled with the bittersweet desire to protect the bond with her sibling, even as the very things that symbolize their shared history are mercilessly broken apart.

According to Dr. Laura Markham, a clinical psychologist and parenting expert, when children destroy the belongings of an older sibling, they are often trying to get attention or showing anger about being left behind. The younger sister may feel hurt that her older sister moved away to college. Breaking things is her way of expressing these difficult feelings, even though it is wrong. The older sister has a right to feel angry because her parents have not stopped the behavior and her personal space has been violated many times.

Avoiding the younger sister completely is not the best solution because it may make the child feel even more abandoned and cause her behavior to get worse. A better approach is for the older sister to keep locking her room to protect her items, but still spend small amounts of supervised time with her sister. This helps protect the older sister’s property while still keeping a family relationship.

If being the worst sister ever means that she can’t destroy your things, then be a bad sister. Or tell her that since she broke your things, you can break hers. And watch her say that’s not fair. I then would say “why do you get to treat me this way but I can’t treat you the same?

treat others the way YOU want to be treated."

and If you treat me or my stuff like shit, then I will protect it and not interact with that person. NTA

The older sister feels very angry and tired because her young sister keeps breaking her personal items. To protect her things, she decided to stop seeing her sister completely by only visiting when the sister is away. This action creates a conflict with her parents and sister, who believe she is being too mean to a child who has behavioral problems.

Should an older sibling be allowed to cut off contact with a young sister to protect her own belongings and peace of mind, or is it wrong to abandon a child who is struggling and needs family support?
