I Had to Call the Professor When My Student Started Making Self-Harm Threats in the Hallway

The narrator, an Organic Chemistry Lab Teaching Assistant (TA), describes an escalating series of incidents involving one particular student. Last week, the student arrived 17 minutes late, and although initially let in as a courtesy, she caused a disruption by noisily opening her backpack at the lab table.

When the TA instructed her to move her bag to the door, the student reacted by swinging her backpack, which resulted in knocking over and breaking lab equipment. Following this, the TA spoke with the student, who disclosed mental health struggles, leading the TA to refer her to the campus wellness center and send her home for the day, ending the conversation when the student pressed about making up the lab.

As leading communication specialist Dr. Stephen Covey advised, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” This principle is critical here, as the TA moved quickly from enforcing rules to managing a mental health crisis without establishing initial understanding or rapport during the second interaction.

The TA was obligated to enforce safety protocols, especially regarding attire and equipment handling, which are non-negotiable in a chemistry lab setting. However, the student’s reaction—escalating from distress over dropping the course to hysterical behavior and self-harm statements—signaled a situation beyond standard disciplinary action. The TA’s decision to call the wellness center was a necessary escalation for safety, but doing so in front of peers likely exacerbated the student’s sense of shame and panic, leading to the breakdown.

The TA acted correctly by prioritizing safety (refusing entry in leggings, calling for support when self-harm was mentioned). Moving forward, when a student discloses significant mental health struggles, the TA should immediately pivot from enforcing consequences to confirming safety. A constructive recommendation would be to have an established, pre-approved protocol for handing off students exhibiting acute distress to designated campus safety personnel immediately, rather than attempting to manage the emotional fallout while simultaneously teaching.

The TA is currently facing scrutiny after a subsequent incident where the student arrived late and in non-compliant attire, leading to a public emotional breakdown involving self-harm statements. The core conflict lies between the TA’s responsibility to enforce safety regulations and manage the lab environment, and the student’s severe mental distress manifesting in unprofessional and disruptive behavior.

The central question is whether the TA’s actions—enforcing rules, restricting access, and escalating the situation by involving campus support when faced with a student in crisis—were appropriate given the dual demands of teaching safety protocols and responding to a visible mental health emergency. The reader must weigh adherence to policy against immediate welfare concerns.
