AITA for grabbing an old woman’s arm after she stuck her fingers in my baby’s mouth?

In a quiet moment meant for bonding and joy, a mother’s protective instincts were violently tested. What should have been a simple interaction filled with smiles and gentle curiosity turned into a harrowing encounter, where boundaries were shattered and her fears dismissed in the most cruel and invasive way.

Her heart raced with panic and disbelief as an older stranger crossed every line, touching her vulnerable infant without consent, then responding with aggression and cruelty when asked to stop. In that instant, the fragile feeling of safety shattered, replaced by a raw mix of shock, fear, and the desperate need to protect her child at all costs.

As renowned family therapist and author Dr. Laura Markham explains, “When a child is in danger, our primary responsibility is to protect them, and that protection sometimes requires setting firm boundaries, even if it causes temporary discomfort or conflict.”

The poster demonstrated appropriate motivation by prioritizing their infant’s health and safety above avoiding social confrontation, especially since the older woman escalated the situation from verbal boundary violation to physical endangerment by placing fingers in the baby’s mouth. The poster’s initial polite requests were ignored, signaling that only direct, firm action would halt the dangerous behavior. While grabbing the stranger’s arm was an escalation, it was a direct response to the stranger refusing to cease a dangerous act against a vulnerable infant. The stranger’s subsequent physical retaliation (hitting the poster) does not invalidate the poster’s right to enforce the boundary against endangerment.

The poster’s reaction, while intense, was justifiable given the immediate threat to the child’s well-being. Moving forward, the poster should reaffirm their right to protect their child, regardless of the aggressor’s age. A constructive recommendation for future similar incidents would be to use clear, loud verbal commands paired with physical distancing (blocking access) rather than physical contact, if possible, while always maintaining the focus on immediate safety.”

The original poster felt compelled to intervene physically after witnessing a stranger violate clear boundaries by putting fingers into their high-risk infant’s mouth, leading to a physical and verbal assault from the stranger. The central conflict lies between the poster’s protective instinct and the societal pressure, highlighted by a relative’s comment, suggesting that deference to an older person should supersede defending one’s child against clear physical danger.

Given that the poster acted decisively to stop an immediate health threat to their baby, but was subsequently assaulted, the core question remains: At what point does protecting a child from danger justify overriding social norms regarding physical deference to strangers, and was the protective action taken proportionate to the extreme violation of boundaries?
