For those who have been following the journey of Phoebe, the beloved elephant at the Columbus Zoo, we’re thrilled to bring you another update on her extraordinary pregnancy. It’s been a long road—two years, to be exact—and the moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. Over the weekend, Phoebe’s progesterone levels dropped significantly, signaling that she is officially entering the final stretch of her pregnancy. The excitement is palpable, and our dedicated elephant care team is ready for what lies ahead.

For those unfamiliar with the intricate details of elephant pregnancies, they are notably lengthy. Typically lasting about 22 months, an elephant’s pregnancy is one of the longest in the animal kingdom. During this time, Phoebe has been under close observation by our skilled team, ensuring she’s well taken care of, healthy, and comfortable. But now, the wait is almost over, and the team has shifted into round-the-clock observation mode to be there for Phoebe every step of the way.

Phoebe, who is an experienced and confident mother, has already proven herself with five previous calves. Our care team is familiar with her habits, her needs, and the little signs that let them know when she’s ready to give birth. They’ve been spending extra time with her, performing daily ultrasounds to track her progress and anticipate the best window for delivery. It’s a delicate balance, as each elephant birth is unique, and our team is prepared for every moment, big or small, that comes Phoebe’s way.

The birth of an elephant calf is an incredible event, one that’s filled with both challenges and triumphs. Once Phoebe’s calf is born, the team will immediately begin monitoring a series of key milestones. The first priority is ensuring that the calf is breathing properly and moving around well. Next, the team will carefully watch for the calf to take its first steps, nurse, and vocalize—each one of these milestones is a sign that both mother and baby are healthy and thriving. Another important moment for the care team is when Phoebe’s little one lies down for the first time. This is a significant moment for both mother and calf, and the team will be there to observe how Phoebe reacts to her new baby’s first attempts at resting.

This will be Phoebe’s sixth calf, making her an experienced and devoted mother. It’s worth noting that this will be the second baby elephant born at the Columbus Zoo this year, following the birth of Rita Jean to mom Sunny in July—a momentous event, as it marks the first time in nearly 100 years that we’ve seen two elephant births in a single year. Every new birth is an important step forward in the conservation of this endangered species, and the arrival of Phoebe’s calf is no exception. The Columbus Zoo has long been dedicated to the preservation of elephants, and the work of our elephant care team is critical in ensuring the survival of these majestic creatures.

The next time we update you, we’ll be sharing the news that Phoebe’s calf has arrived! It’s a moment we’ve been eagerly anticipating, and we’re so excited to share it with all of you. In the meantime, we ask for your positive thoughts and well wishes for Phoebe, her calf, and our dedicated elephant care team. They have worked tirelessly to prepare for this moment, and we know their care and attention will make all the difference in giving Phoebe and her baby the best possible start.

Phoebe’s journey has been long and full of challenges, but it’s also been a beautiful reminder of the strength, resilience, and love that elephants possess. We can’t wait to celebrate this incredible moment with all of you, as Phoebe’s calf takes its first steps into the world. Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for your continued support
