Tommy, a 3-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier , was already an Instagram star even before his little human sister arrived.

With over 350,000 followers, the dog charmed everyone with his friendliness and natural charisma. But a few months ago, the family’s life took on a new chapter, and Tommy took on a new role: that of big brother.

And, like any firstborn who sees his family grow, he was anxious, curious and, at first, even a little insecure.

The first meeting

The video posted by the owner shows this exact moment. Tommy, with his hind legs tense and his body slightly apart, stretched his neck to sniff the newborn baby. Cautious, yes, but also full of curiosity.

In the caption, the tutors wrote:

Sharing Tommy’s reaction when we brought his little sister home. As you can see, he was very interested, but a little unsure (those back legs). We can’t wait to see their relationship develop and take you on the journey.

Within minutes, insecurity gave way to affection. After smelling and getting to know the new member of the family better, Tommy couldn’t let go of her.

A dedicated brother

Today, months after their first meeting, Tommy has taken on the role of big brother with all the functions possible: nap inspector, sneeze supporter, foot cleaner, dirty diaper inspector, and private security guard.

When the baby turned four months old, he decided to share his toys. And now, at five months old, the bond is already visible in the little one’s gestures, as she begins to reciprocate the affection with her little hands.

A video capturing this journey was shared on Instagram and moved the internet. So far, it has 2.1 million views and over 153,000 likes.

In the caption, the tutors wrote:

“We used to say life was divided into two periods: ‘Before Tommy’ and ‘After Tommy.’ Now he has the same, but with his little sister, and watching their love grow is the sweetest thing in the world.”

Repercussion

Among the comments, many followers were moved and shared similar experiences:

“You prepared Tommy perfectly! Congratulations to both parents!”

“I’m so excited for her to walk and play with his ball. It’s a beautiful friendship and memories that will last forever.”

“Wonderful! We had the same experience with our first staffy, Jake, and our daughter Abbie… He never left her side, and loved being involved in every aspect of her life. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.”

But it’s worth remembering: behind a harmonious relationship like that of Tommy and his little sister, there is preparation.

How to prepare your dog for the arrival of a baby

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the arrival of a baby brings an avalanche of sounds, smells, and changes in routine that can be challenging for a dog, especially if he or she has been an only child for a long time.

Therefore, experts recommend that owners anticipate, starting to prepare the animal a few months before birth.

Important tips from the ASPCA:

  • Basic training: commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “drop it” help control impulses and maintain safe coexistence.
  • Gradual adaptation: introduce baby’s smells, sounds and objects early, always associating them with positive experiences.
  • New routine: Start changing outing, feeding, and attention schedules a few months in advance to reduce the shock when the baby arrives.
  • Special skills: Teaching your dog to back away when asked or to focus on your owner’s hand can help prevent stressful situations.
  • Doll as training: using a doll to simulate everyday situations helps the dog get used to having a baby on their lap.
