AITAH for refusing to let my niece have her wedding at my so-called “castle”?

Twenty-eight years ago, my wife and I combined our savings — most of it from an inheritance after my father passed — and bought a rundown farmhouse in southern Europe. It wasn’t much at the time, but it had a small turret, so our family jokingly started calling it “The Castle.”

We made a choice early on. Instead of investing in a large home in our native country, we kept things modest at home and focused on restoring the farmhouse. It took years, but by the time our eldest was born, it was finally finished. It’s not a literal castle, of course. It has five bedrooms and a small garden pool, but to us, it’s paradise. We’ve always welcomed family and friends to use it whenever they liked — with one rule: the master bedroom is off-limits.

That room takes up most of the third floor. The rest of the bedrooms are on the second. My wife and I have shared that room for over two decades, and it holds many of our belongings. It’s personal.

A few days ago, during a Zoom engagement party, my niece announced she wanted to get married at The Castle. I didn’t want to cause a scene, so I gently joked about the size, saying they’d be limited to 25 guests. She lit up and said she had it all figured out — they’d put canopies up in the field nearby (which we don’t even own), and all guests could stay in nearby hotels. She would organize transport “for everyone to the villa.”

My wife and I stayed quiet to keep things pleasant. Later that weekend, my niece followed up with a text to confirm her idea. After asking about logistics, I found out she planned to use the master bedroom as her bridal suite, and the rest of the house for her bridal party. She expected my wife, kids, and I to find lodging elsewhere.

I gave it some thought, talked it over with my wife, and the next day we politely declined. I explained it was too small and we weren’t comfortable with anyone staying in our bedroom.

That’s when things exploded. My niece was furious. My sister, her mother, backed her up, saying I was destroying her dream wedding. She even claimed that since I used inheritance money, the house was “family property.” That claim is ridiculous.

For the record, we did offer a compromise. We said they could use the house, but not the master bedroom. We also said the guest list needed to be kept under 25 or that she would need proper permissions and insurance to use the surrounding field. We even offered to host a rehearsal dinner. She rejected all of it. So we said no.

Now I’m being treated like the villain.

If you and your family are staying there, she can’t pretend to be a princess in a castle. I bet she’s been calling it “her family castle” to all her friends and would be embarrassed if she has to admit she’s only ever stayed there as a guest.

NTA. That’s not family property. It’s yours. And you’ve been generous for years. Now they’re trying to take over your space and push you out for their big day. That’s not okay.

NTA. Your niece is acting entitled. She didn’t even ask properly before announcing plans to everyone. Then she expects to kick you out of your own home. On top of that, she thinks she can just use a field you don’t own? This is way beyond reasonable.

NTA. She’s counting on using land she doesn’t even have permission to access. What’s she going to do when the owner says no — trespass? And those are olive groves, right? No farmer is going to want guests stomping on their crops. This whole plan is a mess.

INFO: Why does she absolutely need to use your master bedroom? Can’t she just book a bridal suite at a hotel like a normal person?

NTA. If the property is too small, it’s too small. She can’t just build canopies on land that doesn’t belong to you. And if she really wants a romantic setting, she can use the backyard and book a luxury hotel for her honeymoon suite.
