AITA for refusing to be the designated driver because I wanted to enjoy the party too?

She was excited for a night of laughter and reconnection, a rare escape from the grind of endless work hours. But when the request came to be the designated driver yet again, a flicker of hesitation grew—a quiet battle between loyalty and self-preservation.

Turning down Sarah’s plea wasn’t just about refusing a favor; it unraveled the fragile threads of friendship, exposing raw feelings and accusations that cut deeper than expected. What began as a simple night out spiraled into a painful reckoning of boundaries, trust, and what it truly means to care.

AITA for refusing to be the designated driver because I wanted to enjoy the party too?

As renowned researcher Dr. Brené Brown explains, “Boundaries are the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously.” This situation clearly illustrates a boundary violation where one party (Sarah) believes the expectation of support overrides the other party’s (OP’s) need for self-care and autonomy.

The OP is experiencing boundary fatigue. Having previously assumed the role of designated driver due to Sarah’s history, the OP has established a pattern where their sobriety and responsibility are expected. When the OP attempts to alter this established pattern to prioritize their own well-being—a valid emotional need after working long hours—Sarah escalates by using guilt (“selfish”) and questioning the commitment to the friendship. This behavior is manipulative, shifting the focus from Sarah’s need for safe transport to the OP’s alleged failure as a friend.

The OP’s action of refusing was appropriate because establishing personal boundaries is essential for maintaining long-term relationships and preventing burnout. In future situations, the OP could handle this more effectively by communicating the boundary earlier and proactively suggesting alternative solutions (like confirming a ride-share service budget or suggesting an earlier end to the night) rather than just saying no, thereby addressing Sarah’s underlying safety need without sacrificing their own evening.

The original poster (OP) faced a conflict between their desire to enjoy a social event without responsibility and their friend Sarah’s expectation that the OP would sacrifice their evening to act as a designated driver due to past issues with drinking and driving. The wider friend group has applied social pressure, reinforcing Sarah’s expectations and framing the refusal as selfishness.

Given the history of being relied upon and the OP’s stated need for a break, was the OP justified in prioritizing their own enjoyment and setting a boundary by refusing to drive, or did the pre-existing context of Sarah’s past issues obligate the OP to assist their friend for ‘just one night’?
