Someone at work stole my chair. So I had them arrested.

In a world where comfort should be a basic right, one man’s simple quest for a decent chair spiraled into a battle of respect and ownership. What started as a quest for relief from a painfully uncomfortable office chair turned into a dramatic confrontation that tested boundaries, authority, and the meaning of personal property.

Caught in a storm of workplace injustice, he stood firm against blatant disregard, armed not just with a receipt but with unwavering resolve. His fight wasn’t just for a chair—it was for dignity, fairness, and the simple truth that what’s yours is yours, no matter the setting.

Dr. Henry Cloud, a clinical psychologist and author of ‘Boundaries,’ states that boundaries are the property lines of our lives that define what we are responsible for. In this case, the office owner failed to respect the legal boundary of personal property. By telling the employee that a personally owned item was ‘first come, first serve,’ the owner created a situation where theft was tolerated. The employee felt forced to call the police because their personal boundaries and property rights were being completely ignored by management.

The coworker’s actions show a sense of entitlement and a lack of respect for others. He admitted to taking the chair but refused to return it, which is legally defined as theft. The boss’s behavior is also problematic because he used the threat of termination to try to stop a legal police investigation. This shows a toxic work environment where management protects the wrongdoer instead of the victim. The employee was forced to choose between their job and their $1800 investment, showing a total breakdown in workplace communication and ethics.

The employee’s decision to press charges was appropriate because theft is a criminal matter that management cannot simply ignore. However, bringing very expensive personal items into a new office can be a risk. In the future, the employee should get written confirmation of personal property from HR or management when they first bring it in. This creates a paper trail that can prevent disputes. While the employee lost their job, leaving a company that does not respect property rights is likely a better long-term decision.

The employee feels that they were defending their personal property from a thief and that management was complicit in the act by refusing to intervene. They chose to prioritize their legal rights and the value of their property over a job at a company that did not respect individual ownership.

Was the worker right to involve the authorities and potentially ruin a coworker’s career over a piece of furniture? Or should they have tried to resolve the matter within the company to save their own job and the coworker’s livelihood?
