A mother’s heart is torn between love and tough lessons as she watches her son struggle to find his footing in a world that demands more than passion alone. She supported his dreams, investing in his theater degree with hope, but now faces the painful reality of his choices as he asks for more help—this time to chase a new path that she had warned him to finance on his own.

In the quiet conflict of their conversation, harsh words echo the frustration and fear beneath the surface. She wrestles with the instinct to protect versus the need to hold firm, questioning if enabling him would truly be kindness or just delaying the inevitable growth he must face alone.

Dr. Henry Cloud, a well-known psychologist and author of the book Boundaries, states that boundaries define what we are responsible for and what we are not. In this case, the parent set a clear boundary years ago about the limits of their financial help. Refusing to pay for a second degree is a healthy way to help the son learn independence. The son’s angry reaction shows that he is struggling to take responsibility for his career choices.

The parent’s decision to keep this boundary is appropriate, as constantly saving an adult child from financial reality can prevent them from growing. To handle this better, the parent should speak kindly but firmly, acknowledging the son’s stress without giving in to guilt. They can offer non-financial support, such as helping him search for student loans or career advice.

The parent feels conflicted between wanting to help their struggling child and keeping a long-established limit on financial help. This creates a direct conflict between the parent’s belief in personal responsibility and the son’s expectation of help during a difficult career transition.

Should a parent who has the money pay for an adult child’s second degree after warning them beforehand, or should they refuse to pay to teach the child independence?
