AITA for not giving my parents free tickets?

In the quiet shadows of a family marked by miracles and challenges, a sixteen-year-old boy grapples with the ache of invisibility. As the “glass child,” he watches his little sister Ellie, a beacon of hope after repeated loss, command their parents’ attention with her complex needs and physical struggles. His own autism and quieter struggles fade into the background, unnoticed and uncelebrated.

Caught between love for his sister and the yearning for recognition, he navigates a world where his passions and achievements are overlooked. Birthday plans altered, performances unattended, and support quietly withheld—he carries a silent weight, longing not to compete for attention, but simply to be seen and valued for who he is.

Dr. Jonice Webb, a licensed psychologist who specializes in childhood emotional neglect, explains that when parents consistently ignore a child’s emotional needs, the child feels invisible. In this situation, the teenager is experiencing what is known as ‘glass child’ syndrome. This happens to siblings of children with high needs, where their own feelings are ignored because their sibling requires so much attention. The teenager’s parents have repeatedly missed his events and canceled his plans. Because of this, he has learned to expect that they will not show up. Giving the tickets to his godfather is a logical way to protect himself from being disappointed again. The parents’ angry reaction is a way to avoid their own guilt about neglecting him.

The teenager’s choice was appropriate because he has a right to be supported at his events. He did not stop his parents from coming, as they could still buy tickets. He simply chose to give his free tickets to people who have proven they will actually attend. For the future, it would be helpful for the teenager to state his boundaries clearly before making decisions to avoid sudden arguments. The family would also benefit from counseling to help the parents understand that even though their son has fewer needs than his sister, he still needs their time and attention.

Even if they go so that others won’t think they are “bad parents” by not attending- it will still be a better outcome than them not being there at all. And yes, they need to pay for both their tickets. No more free tickets for them anymore!

The teenager feels ignored and hurt because his parents always focus on his sister’s needs instead of his own. His decision to give the tickets to his godfather shows he wants to be supported, but this conflicts with his parents’ belief that they should always come first, even when they do not show up.

Should parents of high-needs children be excused for missing their other children’s events, or is a neglected sibling right to give their tickets to relatives who actually make the effort to attend?
