AITA for not going home and changing my shoes for a restaurant’s dress code?

She arrived hopeful and ready to celebrate a milestone with her colleagues, dressed thoughtfully for the occasion in a hot climate’s best compromise. Yet, what should have been a night of camaraderie quickly turned into a moment of crushing embarrassment, as a rigid dress code rule singled her out in front of everyone, shattering her confidence and igniting a wave of anxiety.

The sting of exclusion was sharp and unexpected, leaving her isolated and overwhelmed. Instead of sharing in the joy of a retirement dinner, she found herself retreating in silence, her anxiety amplified by the judgmental eyes and the harsh words that echoed louder than the laughter around her.

According to Dr. Ellen Hendriksen, a clinical psychologist and anxiety expert, social anxiety often triggers a powerful fight-or-flight response when a person faces public scrutiny or embarrassment. In this situation, the hostess publicly singled out the employee for her footwear, which immediately triggered her anxiety. While the dress code violation was an accident, the public nature of the rejection made the employee feel exposed and judged in front of her peers, leading to an emotional meltdown where leaving felt like the only safe option.

The conflict escalated because of differing expectations between the employee and her workplace. The employee focused on her immediate emotional safety, while her coworkers and boss focused on the social obligation of the retirement dinner. The boss’s comment that she should have “sucked it up” overlooks the reality of anxiety, treating a panic response as a simple lack of willpower. However, the coworkers’ frustration is also understandable, as they felt her sudden departure detracted from the celebratory focus on the retiring colleague.

The employee’s decision to leave was an understandable act of self-preservation in the moment, but her communication could have been handled more effectively. To handle similar situations in the future, it is recommended that she briefly inform a trusted coworker or her manager that she is feeling unwell and needs to go home, rather than disappearing. Later, once calm, she can follow up with a simple apology for her absence to restore professional relationships.

The employee felt deeply embarrassed and overwhelmed by a public rejection at a company event, leading her to retreat to safety due to her anxiety. However, her coworkers and manager viewed her departure as selfish, believing she prioritized her own comfort over honoring a retiring colleague.

Should an individual be expected to suppress an anxiety-induced meltdown to fulfill social and professional obligations, or is it acceptable to leave a work event when one’s mental well-being is compromised?
