Living with a roommate can be a delicate balance of patience and understanding, but when boundaries are repeatedly crossed, frustration quietly festers beneath the surface. For this young woman, what began as simple forgetfulness turned into a relentless cycle of unacknowledged favors and thoughtless actions that chipped away at her peace of mind.

Despite her efforts to maintain harmony, the constant demands and disregard for her time left her feeling taken for granted and emotionally drained. The dorm, meant to be a sanctuary during a challenging semester, instead became a battleground of silent disappointments and unmet respect.

According to Dr. Henry Cloud, a clinical psychologist and boundary expert, individuals must take responsibility for their own lives and respect the boundaries of others. In this case, the roommate repeatedly violated the author’s boundaries by expecting her to resolve her lockouts at all hours, showing a clear lack of personal responsibility. The roommate’s behavior of turning on lights at 5 AM and calling repeatedly during exams demonstrates a disregard for the author’s basic needs, such as sleep and study time.

The author’s response of ignoring her roommate was an attempt to protect her own peace, but doing so passively created more conflict and distress. While the roommate’s actions were highly inconsiderate, pretending to sleep while she cried in the hallway prevented a direct resolution. For future situations, the author should clearly communicate her limits during a calm moment, advising the roommate to utilize the 24/7 campus desk instead of relying on her.

The student feels overwhelmed and frustrated by her roommate’s constant lack of consideration and frequent lockouts. The central conflict lies between the student’s need to protect her sleep and mental health during exams, and the social expectation to help a roommate in distress, even when that roommate behaves irresponsibly.

Should the student have opened the door to help her crying roommate despite the ongoing pattern of disrespect, or was she justified in ignoring the calls to protect her own boundaries and sleep?
