AITA for Having an Elderly Neighbor’s Car Towed After She Snitched on Me to the Property Manager?

I’m a 25-year-old guy living in an apartment complex where rent is through the roof—$3,000 a month. The rules here are kind of whatever. Technically, you’re not allowed to do car maintenance in the parking lot, but people still do it. I’ve seen others out there for hours working on their cars. I’ll occasionally do a quick oil change—takes 30 minutes, I clean up after myself, and I don’t block anyone.

A few weeks ago, an older lady moved into the unit above mine. I’d guess she’s in her 70s, and she immediately gave off serious “Karen” vibes. Always watching the neighbors, complaining about stuff that doesn’t matter, like chalk drawings or where people store their bikes.

Anyway, one afternoon while I was changing my oil, she walked over with her little white dog and said, “You know it’s against the rules to work on your car out here, right?” I just smiled and said, “Oh, I didn’t know.” She told me I was being disrespectful and warned she’d report me.

I didn’t argue. I finished what I was doing and left it at that. But sure enough, the next day I found a $20 fine slipped under my door. Apparently, someone had filed an “anonymous complaint.” I already knew who it was.

I spoke to our property manager, Dan, about it. He’s super laid back—40s, always rolling around in a golf cart, and generally doesn’t enforce minor stuff unless corporate forces his hand. He confirmed that once a formal complaint is filed, he has to act on it, even if he personally doesn’t care. He even joked that I should just do it late at night, after “Karen’s” bedtime.

That gave me an idea.

I asked if I could file a formal complaint about a vehicle in the parking lot with expired tags—Karen’s husband’s car. I knew it hadn’t been moved in weeks. Dan laughed and said, “That’s devious, brother,” but he took the report.

Where I live, property owners are allowed to tow vehicles with expired registration without any notice. So, the car was towed later that day.

The reaction? Glorious chaos.

She was absolutely livid, crying and yelling. Everyone in the building was watching from their balconies. Dan calmly told her there was nothing he could do—he received an “official complaint,” and rules are rules.

I chimed in with, “It’s unfortunate how some people need to learn to mind their own business instead of constantly reporting everyone.” She burst into tears and said they couldn’t afford to get the car back because of medical bills from her husband’s surgery. Apparently, the impound fees totaled over $300.

Some of my friends think it was hilarious—and honestly, I kind of do too. But a few people said I went too far. That it was petty revenge, especially since I only got a $20 fine and she’s an elderly woman taking care of her sick husband.

She hasn’t been outside much since then. No more reports, no more drama. But yeah, a small part of me does feel a little bad.

So… AITAH for having her car towed in response to her reporting me?

NTA. She plays stupid games and finally won the prize. It was only $20 for you, but how many of your neighbors also got fined because of her? That adds up quickly. Don’t let anyone guilt you—she’s the real a**hole here.

From an old lady who’s learned over the years to keep her nose out of other people’s business, I can officially tell you: YANTA! She should’ve befriended the nice guy who can do a little backyard car maintenance. Never know when you might need a favor from him.

I was all set to say YTA, especially with the “I know I’m breaking the rules but who cares” vibe. But communities only work when people actually act like a community—and she clearly has no interest in that.
Maybe if she wasn’t so eager to report everyone over petty stuff, people would’ve had her back during a tough time. After thinking it through, I’m voting NTA.

NTA. If you don’t want others pointing fingers, don’t go around pointing yours. It’s that simple.

NTA. Sure, there’s a difference—but she hasn’t exactly been neighborly. She broke the rules too and got what was coming.
It sucks that it wasn’t a $20 lesson, but oh well. If a 20-something acted like this, no one would defend them. Just because she’s older doesn’t mean she gets a pass. Let’s be honest—she’s probably been like this her whole life.

It’s not $300 for $20. It’s $300 for a lifetime of pulling crap like this and never getting called out. NTA.

Eventually her car will be up for auction. Buy it. Change the oil outside her window.

NTA. She wanted to play petty games—but forgot others could play better. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

I’m so tired of people acting like senior citizens should get a free pass for being rude, entitled, or just mean.
If this were a kid tattling on everyone, we’d all tell them to stop. She reported you for no good reason, and karma bit back. What goes around, comes around.

Let me just say this—but keep reading: YTA… AND I FKING LOVE IT.**
Yeah, it was a dk move. But she was the ahole first. Your response was absolutely justified.

So yeah, NTA. Total ahole move—but totally deserved. I salute you for giving that crusty old bch a taste of her own medicine.
