I (M28) have been in a relationship with my girlfriend for over 10 months now. She recently moved into my apartment. Her sister often asks her to watch her 1-year-old son while she cares for her husband, who has been hospitalized for the past two weeks. I only know where my girlfriend’s parents live—I’ve never been to her sister’s house.
Last week, my girlfriend was working out of town for four days. Early one morning, her sister came by with her son, asking if my girlfriend had returned to watch the baby for a while. I told her that my girlfriend was still out of town. She insisted that I watch the baby for a few hours. I explained that I couldn’t do that and that I had work to go to—I work at the local hospital.
She completely ignored me, walked away, and said it wouldn’t take long. I ended up waiting for an hour, making me late for work. I called my girlfriend’s sister and told her to come pick up her son because I needed to leave. I asked for their address, as I wanted to bring the baby to their house myself, but she refused. Then I thought about dropping him off at my girlfriend’s parents’ house, but she yelled at me and said she’d deal with me if I dared take him there. I felt stuck and had no idea what else to do.
After she turned her phone off, I brought the baby to the local police station. I gave them enough information so they could contact my girlfriend’s sister. Later, I found out that she had been brought into the police station. She lied, saying I had agreed to watch her son, and claimed she knew me well and that everything was arranged in advance.
Then she started crying, talking about her husband being in the hospital and how overwhelmed she felt. I denied her version of the story, explaining that I never agreed to watch the baby and that I wasn’t capable of taking on such a responsibility. For some reason, the rest of the family got involved, and things quickly escalated.
I had her family yelling at me, calling me all kinds of names for what I did. I was eventually allowed to leave, but my entire work shift was ruined. My girlfriend later found out from her family that I’d caused an issue between her sister and the police, adding to everything else her sister was already going through—all because I supposedly refused to help.
I told her exactly what happened and explained what her family had done. She apologized and assured me it was no one’s fault but her sister’s. Apparently, her sister had only wanted me to watch the baby so she could go renew her gym membership. That left me speechless.
Still, her parents and other relatives are angry with me. They say I messed everything up and now claim they see me as nothing more than a selfish jerk.
