The Police Foundation of Colorado Springs has received an incredible wave of support — more than $68,000 in donations — for K9 Roam, a police dog who was critically injured in the line of duty earlier this month.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), most of the donations came from residents across Colorado, with additional contributions pouring in from 32 other states, as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Belgium.
On October 15, K9 Roam was helping officers take a barricaded suspect into custody when he was stabbed multiple times, suffering severe lacerations to his head and abdomen. Officers rushed him to Animal ER Care in Colorado Springs, where emergency veterinarians worked to stabilize his condition before transferring him to Mountain View Veterinary Surgery for an emergency operation.
During the surgery — which lasted several hours — doctors were forced to amputate Roam’s left hind leg to save his life. He also required multiple blood transfusions. After using the hospital’s available blood supply, a local animal blood bank, HemoSolutions, stepped in to assist, sending staff and equipment so other working K9s could donate blood for their injured teammate.
Despite the critical nature of his injuries, Roam showed remarkable resilience. By October 18, just three days after surgery, he was stable enough to return home with his handler.
To help fund Roam’s recovery, the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs launched several fundraising efforts, including the sale of #RootingForRoam wristbands and 2026 CSPD K9 unit calendars featuring Roam. The nonprofit also announced that a Roam plush K9 is currently in production and expected to be available within the next month.
“This is truly a remarkable time for us,” said Nicole Magic with the Police Foundation. “It’s the first time we’ve seen this kind of outpouring and support — it’s been very overwhelming, in the best possible way.”
All proceeds from these sales will go directly toward Roam’s medical care and the CSPD K9 Unit, ensuring continued support for the department’s four-legged officers.
Roam’s story has quickly become a symbol of courage and community spirit — a reminder of the risks police dogs face every day and the powerful bond that connects them to the people they protect.
